Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Statement

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Statement

At Citizens Advice Lewisham we are committed to promoting equality, diversity and good relations between different groups, preventing prejudice and discrimination, and ensuring equal access for all sections of the community. We cannot fulfil our charitable objects and mission without making equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) central to our work, both across the service and in every role within it.

What EDI means to us

Equity - Treating everyone the same does not always lead to fair outcomes. We look at the systemic barriers that some groups face and take action to address them, so that our services work for everyone.

Diversity -  We want to reflect the communities we serve, including our clients, staff, volunteers, managers and trustees. People are more likely to use and trust a service when they can see themselves in it, and different backgrounds and experiences help make our services more relevant and accessible.

Inclusion -  We want everyone to feel accepted, respected and welcome. That means challenging discrimination and building a culture where all colleagues and clients belong.

Our commitments

Our EDI Policy applies to paid staff, volunteers, trustees, agency workers and contractors. We will not discriminate, or tolerate discriminatory behaviour, because of any characteristic protected under the Equality Act 2010. We go further than the law by also protecting against discrimination on grounds of socio-economic status, working pattern and caring responsibilities. We treat job applicants, employees, volunteers, clients, suppliers and visitors fairly, and we work to overcome barriers to participation.

Putting it into practice

  • EDI is part of the induction for all staff, volunteers and trustees.

  • We carry out EDI impact assessments when planning and reviewing our work.

  • We review our processes, forms and policies for inclusion, and make accessibility the default.

  • We collect and analyse EDI data on clients and colleagues, and take action where disparities appear.

  • We support learning through training, team conversations and peer support from National Equity Groups.

Accountability

Our Trustee Board and senior leadership team are responsible for making sure CAL is an equitable and inclusive service. The Board oversees our policy, monitors its effectiveness and reviews it annually. Every member of staff and every volunteer is expected to uphold it and to speak up if they see discrimination. Concerns can be raised informally, through our grievance or volunteer complaints procedures, or through whistleblowing where appropriate.
